Why the Washington Football Team should already be eyeing an Aaron Rodgers trade

The Aaron Rodgers era will seemingly be coming to a screeching halt for the Green Bay Packers after the 2021 season. Rodgers and the Packers have been at odds in recent years, and there was a legit chance he was going to either retire or request a trade this offseason. Instead, Rodgers and Green Bay reworked his contract, allowing him more control over where he plays following the upcoming season. With Rodgers likely asking for a trade next offseason, the Washington Football Team should be a team that pursues the All-Pro quarterback.

Ron Rivera and Washington have been building a solid team over the past two years that has a positive trajectory. After operating with four different quarterbacks in 2020, the Football Team signed journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason.

Even though it’s long before we can begin guessing who Rodgers would prefer to play for, here are a few reasons why Washington should be keeping close tabs on the future Hall-of-Fame quarterback.

Washington is a quarterback away from being a contender

In recent years, Washington has put together a defense that has the potential to be one of the best units in the NFL. With Chase Young and Montez Sweat terrorizing quarterbacks off of the edge, Jonathan Allen and DaRon Payne round out one of the best defensive fronts in the NFL. The Football Team also has rookie Jamin Davis, Kendall Fuller, William Jackson III, Landon Collins, and Kamren Curl to round out their defense.

As for the offense, Washington just needs some continuity under center. Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson are looking like long-term fixtures in the offense, and the team signed Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries to improve the wide receiving corps. While playing in an NFC East division that doesn’t have a complete team in sight, adding Rodgers would instantly make Washington a contender in the NFC.

Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t the answer

To piggyback off of my previous reason, Fitzpatrick isn’t the answer for Washington at the quarterback position. Yes, Fitzpatrick is an upgrade over what the team had at quarterback last season, but the Washington Football Team isn’t winning a Super Bowl with Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is always a fun player to watch on and off of the field, and teammates tend to gravitate towards him as a leader. But some people tend to forget that there is a reason why he’s played on so many different teams in the NFL.

While Aaron Rodgers isn’t a young player anymore, he still has a few years of elite play left in him. After all, Rodgers just won the MVP award in 2020 at 37 years old. Getting a mistake-free quarterback like Rodgers that can immediately make Washington a top offense in the league would be better than another year of Fitzpatrick under center. Despite the must-watch interviews that Fitzpatrick will have, the Football Team would rather have a Super Bowl-winning quarterback leading their team.

Rodgers could lure other players to play in Washington

It has been years since the Washington Football Team has been a desirable location for free agents or players wanting a trade. Rivera’s arrival has slightly skewed the perception in the nation’s capital, but it’s not enough for them to land the biggest names available in the offseason.

That being said, being able to win the sweepstakes for Aaron Rodgers would instantly make Washington a place where veterans would love to play for a chance to win a Super Bowl.

Living in Washington isn’t the most ideal thing for free agents, but playing on a team that is making a push for a championship could be enough to lure available players. Tom Brady was able to get Antonio Brown, Rob Gronkowski, and Leonard Fournette to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season en route to a Super Bowl victory. Maybe Rodgers could convince other free agents to join the Football Team next offseason in hopes of competing for a Super Bowl ring.
