Who will have the better 2020 season? Rivers or Carr?
While Derek Carr is a solid quarterback who has some nice weapons on the Raiders, he doesn’t have enough talent to beat out Rivers.
The one major positive thing that happened to Carr this season was the addition of Henry Ruggs. This receiver class was considered one of the best in a long time and Ruggs was considered one of the top receivers due to his ability to stretch the field vertically. The addition of Ruggs will hopefully get Carr to throw the ball down the field more often.
Unfortunately for Carr, even if he is playing okay football for the Raiders, he still may lose his job.
This past season, former Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota lost his starting job to Ryan Tannehill. With Tannehill dominating in Tennessee, Mariota looked for a home elsewhere and wound up in Vegas were he will certainly be competing for the starting job against Carr, and if he loses that battle to Carr, Mariota will certainly be waiting in the wings to take the job from him incase Carr screws up
In regards to Rivers, he will finally have not only a quality offensive line but a great one, something that he hasn’t had his entire career. Rivers will get the luxury of playing behind the likes of Anthony Castonzo, Ryan Kelly, Braden Smith, Mark Glowinski, and Quenton Nelson, all of which add up to be PFFs number one offensive line heading into 2020.
While Rivers will get the luxury of playing behind one of the best offensive lines in the entire NFL, he will lose the luxury of playing with the weapons he had in LA. In LA, Rivers got to play with the likes of Mike Williams, Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry, but now he will be playing with Paris Hilton, T.Y Hilton, and Michael Pittman Jr. While Hilton is a good receiver, and Pittman was a nice addition in the draft, the Colts clearly have worse offensive weapons than the Chargers.
While the Colts don’t have the fire power that Rivers was used to in LA, this Colts offense should be more than enough to help out Rivers be better than Carr, and also help Rivers somewhat return to his old form. Rivers will get the benefit of extra time in the pocket, and will get to play with a good receiver in T.Y Hilton as well as a possible solid receiver in Michael Pittman Jr.
The Choice: Philip Rivers
