Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been the subject of trade rumors over the past couple of weeks, as the Bears are just 2-5 and are expected by many to be sellers heading into the Oct. 31 NFL deadline.
However, Chicago may want to hold on to Johnson.
The 24-year-old put together a masterful performance in the Bears’ surprisingly dominant 30-12 Week 7 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, hauling in a couple of interceptions on the afternoon.
Pro Football Focus did a bit of a deeper dive into Johnson’s performance and showed just how phenomenal he was on Sunday, pointing out that in the six times Johnson was targeted, he picked off two passes, allowed only two receptions for 16 yards and permitted a 2.8 passer rating.
Those are pretty insane numbers.
So, why exactly has Johnson’s name been mentioned in trade speculation?
Well, the fourth-year pro is slated to hit free agency this offseason, and with the Bears having so many holes up and down their roster, some have wondered if they will have the financial means to be able to retain him in the spring.
Plus, Johnson has not exactly been a beacon of health since entering the league as a second-round draft pick back in 2020.
The University of Utah product has never played a full season, and he has already missed a couple of games this year due to a hamstring injury. Johnson was also limited to just 11 contests in 2022.
All of that being said, there is no doubt that Jaylon Johnson is a fine defensive back when he is on the field, and given that he is still very young, there remains plenty of room for him to grow.
Chicago will take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.
