2 Trades That Would Send Derrick Henry To The Dallas Cowboys

Could the Dallas Cowboys actually swing a trade for Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry? Chris Russo feels that it would be a great idea.

Speaking on ESPN’s First Take on Wednesday morning, Russo pitched the idea of the Cowboys acquiring Henry, explaining that he thinks Dallas needs another halfback alongside of Tony Pollard.

Russo added that the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers both look vulnerable and that bringing Henry into the fold could help turn the tide in the Cowboys’ favor.

Here are a couple of trades that could potentially occur in order for Dallas to land Henry.

Trade 1: Cowboys Trade a 2024 First-Round Draft Pick to the Titans for Derrick Henry

Henry has spent his entire eight-year career in Tennessee and has established himself as one of the best players in the franchise’s history. However, his time with the Titans could be coming to a close.

Tennessee is just 2-4 on the season and has not shown any signs of even resembling a contender; not even in the winnable AFC South.

Henry’s contract expires in the spring, and with the Titans appearing headed for a rebuilding, re-signing the 29-year-old doesn’t seem to make much sense. He doesn’t really fit their timeline.

As painful as it may be, it may be best for Tennessee to move Henry for some future assets, and a 2024 first-round pick from Dallas may do the trick.

It would be a rather expensive price to pay for the Cowboys, who could ultimately lose Henry to free agency in the offseason. However, Dallas is starving for a Super Bowl, and Henry would unquestionably help them potentially reach one.

Is Henry the same 2,000+ yard back from 2020? No, but he is still productive and would, at the very least, represent a nice change-of-pace back alongside of Pollard and would help improve the Cowboys’ struggling red-zone offense (Dallas ranks just 26th in red-zone efficiency).

Trade 2: Cowboys Trade Tony Pollard and a 2024 Fifth-Round Draft pick to the Titans for Derrick Henry

If the Titans would prefer an already established talent in return for Henry, Pollard would be a pretty good place to start.

Pollard is just 26 years old, and while he has struggled a bit in 2023, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry, he was terrific last season, racking up 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground while logging 5.2 yards per tote. That got him a trip to the Pro Bowl.

Plus, Pollard has averaged 4.9 yards per attempt over the course of his career since entering the league in 2019, so it’s entirely possible his first six games of this season have been a bit of an outlier.

Of course, there’s also a chance that Pollard is feeling the pressure as the clear No. 1 back for the first time in his career (remember: he had Ezekiel Elliott as a backfield partner prior to 2023), but either way, Pollard has displayed that he can be efficient in the past.

Here, Tennessee lands a solid young running back and a mid-round draft pick. The catch is that Pollard’s contract expires at the end of the year, so the Titans would have to re-sign him.

This package clearly isn’t as sexy as the first option, but it’s still something Tennessee may want to consider if the Cowboys inquire about Derrick Henry.
