3 Free Agents Linked As Possible Fits For Green Bay Packers

Outside of trading Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets, the 2023 offseason has been a very quiet one for the Green Bay Packers. Only two players, long snapper Matt Orzech and safety Tarvarius Moore, were signed away from other franchises.

The Rodgers saga played a part in that as the team had a tenuous salary cap situation they were dealing with. With him now off the books, 2024 will be when Green Bay can get aggressive in the offseason making upgrades to the roster.

For now, they can make smaller additions to fill holes on the roster short-term. The 2023 NFL Draft provided the team with some value, but there are still a few veterans remaining in free agency that would be good targets for the Packers.

One of those players is wide receiver, Jarvis Landry. Green Bay currently has the cheapest wide receiver depth chart in the NFL and very little experience. The top three options in the passing game could be Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Jayden Reed; Watson and Doubs were picked in 2022 and Reed was just picked in April.

Landry would bring a much-needed veteran presence to the wide receiver room who can help them develop while providing Jordan Love with a consistent option working over the middle. The young guys will be given the opportunity first, but bringing in a seasoned veteran is certainly a good idea.

Another player to keep an eye on is safety John Johnson III. Johnson is someone that has working with defensive coordinator Joe Berry as the two overlapped with the Los Angeles Rams from 2017-2020.

Johnson would provide insurance at a position of need. Rudy Ford and Moore don’t have a ton of playing experience to replace Adrian Amos, who remains a free agent. Darnell Savage Jr. struggled mightily, so bringing in a player of Johnson’s caliber would help shore things up.

Last but not least is defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis. He was one of the best interior pass rushers in the NFL last season with the fifth-highest pass rush win rate of all defensive tackles. The depth at defensive tackle is suspect with Jarrad Reed departing and Dean Lowry remaining a free agent, making Ioannidis an ideal target.

Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt are two solid pieces but adding some depth is needed. Ioannidis would provide the team with an option on passing downs that can create some pressure with Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness and eventually Rashan Gary working off the edge.
