3 Intriguing Running Back Options The Eagles Should Consider

Najee Harris, Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles may have a need at the running back position this offseason. D’Andre Swift is set to hit free agency and has not been very vocal about his interest in re-signing with the team.

Granted, there is always a chance that the two parties could work out a new deal. However, we’re going to operate under the assumption that he will be elsewhere next season.

With that in mind, tons of rumors have swirled around New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley. While that’s a great idea, the Eagles likely won’t spend the kind of money it will take to sign Barkley. That leaves them still looking for running back help elsewhere.

Let’s dive in and take a look at three potential options that the Eagles should consider this offseason.

Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers

If the Eagles decide not to re-sign D’Andre Swift, Najee Harris could be an excellent alternative. Although he’s not a free agent, the Eagles’ acquisition of Swift last offseason demonstrates their willingness to make trades for talented running backs.

Harris had a strong 2023 season, finishing seventh in the NFL with 1,035 rushing yards. His cap hit for the next year stands at $4.1 million with $2 million in base salary, making him a more cost-effective option compared to Swift, who might seek a substantial long-term deal in free agency.

If the Steelers opt to part ways with Harris and draft a new running back, the Eagles should express interest. With the exception of Gainwell, Philadelphia currently lacks signed running backs for the next season, making it imperative for them to make a competitive offer if Harris becomes available.

Dalvin Cook, Baltimore Ravens

Dalvin Cook’s recent stint with the New York Jets may not have been the most impressive, but it’s essential to remember his exceptional track record with the Minnesota Vikings.

Before joining the Jets, Cook amassed 7,787 total yards and scored 52 touchdowns. He consistently ranked among the top NFL rushers, finishing sixth in 2022, fifth in 2021, and second in 2020.

Cook’s move to a team that already had Breece Hall may not have been the best decision. If he has something left in the tank, the Eagles could benefit from his experience and pass-catching abilities. Furthermore, after a lackluster 2023 season, Cook is less likely to command a hefty salary in 2024.

Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans

Despite being in his 30s, Derrick Henry continues to rack up 1,000-yard seasons and maintain his productivity.

In 2023, he accumulated 1,167 rushing yards, the second-highest among running backs, and scored 12 touchdowns, tying for seventh in the league.

While Henry may not be the same player who rushed for over 2,000 yards in 2020, he could be a perfect fit for the Eagles if their next offensive coordinator is dedicated to a strong running game. His playing style, reminiscent of former Eagle LeGarrette Blount, could provide a boost.

Although he might not be a feature back anymore, in a running back committee with Kenneth Gainwell handling third-down duties, Henry could become an instant fan favorite in Philadelphia.
