NFL Coach Thinks Colts Landed This Massive Steal In 2024 Draft

The Indianapolis Colts selected University of Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell in the second round of the NFL Draft late last month, and an NFL coach seems to think they landed a massive steal.

When someone mentions the top receivers in this year’s draft class, names like Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze are specified, and usually in that order.

But could Mitchell end up being among that group?

During a recent appearance on The Ross Tucker Podcast, Greg Cosell of NFL Matchup says he spoke to an NFL coach who said he had Mitchell third on his wide receiver draft board ahead of Odunze, who went ninth overall to the Chicago Bears.

Mitchell, who was the 11th receiver selected, didn’t quite have the production of any of those other top three wide outs on the collegiate level, but some scouts are salivating over his talent and potential.

The 21-year-old is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he hauled in 55 receptions for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns as Texas’ No. 2 receiver behind Xavier Worthy, who was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round.

Mitchell began his NCAA career at Georgia in 2021, catching 29 passes for 426 yards and four scores during his first season with the Bulldogs. But after an injury-riddled sophomore season in which Mitchell logged just nine catches for 134 yards and three touchdowns in six games, he transferred to Texas.

At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Mitchell has impressive size for a receiver, and he also flashed his athleticism by running a 4.34-second 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine in February.

The Missouri City, Tx. native was compared to Pittsburgh Steelers star George Pickens by Lance Zierlein of and will be joining a Colts receiving corps that already includes Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs and Alec Pierce.

The general expectation is that Mitchell will end up being one of Indianapolis’ top three receivers in 2024, as Pierce was a bit of a disappointment last season.

Should Mitchell live up to the promise many feel he possesses, Indy will suddenly boast one of the deepest and most talented groups of pass-catchers in football.

We’ll see how Anthony Richardson and the Colts’ coaching staff utilizes Mitchell in his rookie campaign.

Indianapolis went 9-8 and missed the playoffs this past year.
