1,000 Rushing Yards
Last season, 16 running backs crossed the 1,000-yard threshold. Michel fell short of the mark, finishing with 912 rushing yards. While he did finish 17th in the league in rushing yards, he barely stayed ahead of 34-year-old Adrian Peterson. Peterson rushed for 898 yards despite receiving 36 fewer carries than Michel.
LeGarrette Blount became the most recent Patriot to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season in 2016. New England’s running backs only rushed for 1,000 yards three times during the past decade and twice during the 2000s.
New England’s offense usually features multiple running backs. However, Michel is the head of New England’s running back room. While Rex Burkhead, Damien Harris, and James White can play their roles, the backfield only goes as far as Michel carries it.
Last season, the Patriots finished 18th in rushing yards. With the passing game about to take a massive hit, most of the offensive burden in 2020 falls on Michel. He must play a larger, more active role in the offense if New England wants to win any games in 2020.
