It’s a low-risk proposition
The idea of signing Cam Newton in unrestricted free agency is completely different than the thought of trying to acquire him in a trade. Not having to sacrifice anything besides salary cap space is a far more reasonable proposition when it comes to taking a flier on him.
If the former Panthers quarterback were to manage to stay healthy and perform at a high-level, he’d bring a caliber of player they otherwise wouldn’t be able to land. Having a supporting cast with Austin Ekeler, Keenan Allen, and Hunter Henry should only reduce the risk as well.
There would still be a need for the Chargers to improve their offensive line, but that holds true regardless of who is under center. They struggled mightily to protect Philip Rivers last season and having great weapons only goes so far when the pocket isn’t clean.
