Aaron Rodgers is going to love Mel Kiper’s projected first-round pick for the Packers

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers were only a piece or two away from making it to the Super Bowl last season. After finishing the regular season with a 13-3 record, the Packers made a run to the NFC Championship Game. Unfortunately, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers by a final score of 37-20.

So far this offseason, the Packers have been relatively quiet. They brought in linebacker Christian Kirksey, offensive tackle Rick Wagner, and wide receiver Devin Funchess. All three of those guys should have an immediate role for the team.

Now, the team is focusing on the upcoming 2020 NFL Draft. They hold the No. 30 overall pick in the draft and will have an opportunity to get another weapon for Rodgers.

Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN’s NFL Draft guru, has a first-round projection that Rodgers and the Packers are going to love. He has the team taking Clemson star wideout Tee Higgins with the No. 30 pick.

If the Packers want to get over the hump in the final stage of Aaron Rodgers’ career, they’re going to have to give him better targets outside of Davante Adams. Adding Devin Funchess isn’t going to cut it. At 6-foot-3, Higgins is a big target who gobbled up touchdowns in college (his 27 tied for most in school history with Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins). He could take some of Jimmy Graham’s red zone targets.

Last season with the Tigers, Higgins ended up catching 59 passes for 1,167 yards and 13 touchdowns. Those numbers show a bit of the potential that Higgins brings to the field.

Standing in at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, Higgins has been compared to Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green by NFL.com. He has great speed, size, and athleticism. Paired with Davante Adams, the Packers would finally have a lethal one-two punch for Rodgers to work with.

Rodgers isn’t getting any younger. If the Packers want to compete for another Super Bowl with him leading the way, they need to bring in more weapons.

Don’t be surprised if the Packers end up taking Higgins at No. 30. They could go with a linebacker or another position, but wide receiver seems like the biggest need. This selection would make everyone in Green Bay very happy.
