New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers was asked about the state of his former Green Bay Packers club on the Pat McAfee Show this week, and Rodgers gave a very intriguing (and accurate) answer.
Rodgers cited multiple examples of NFL narratives changing from week to week, citing his own Jets squad as anecdotal evidence. Everyone had New York left for dead when Rodgers went down with a torn Achilles in Week 1, and when the Jets were 1-3, everyone was calling for Zach Wilson’s head.
However, Gang Green has now won its last two games to get to .500, and suddenly people are saying that the Wilson-led Jets have a shot of winning the AFC East.
Rodgers also mentioned the Minnesota Vikings, who began the season 0-3 and had everyone speculating that Kirk Cousins could get dealt before the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline. But the Vikings then proceeded to win three of their next four games and are right back in the NFC playoff picture. Now, fans and media pundits are wondering if they could potentially be buyers.
Essentially, Rodgers is stating that there has been a pretty stark overreaction to the Packers’ play over the last three games and that if Green Bay turns the tables and beats Minnesota this weekend, the narrative will flip back the other way. Everyone will praise Jordan Love and the Packers, and those same people will also claim that the Vikings are done again.
Aaron Rodgers is actually 100 percent right. Because the NFL is such a short season, narratives tend to change on a dime more than any other sport. What someone says about a particular team on Monday morning may be completely different from what they said about that same club on Saturday night.
The Packers are 2-4 this season. They have lost three straight games, but they will have an opportunity to get everyone back on their side this Sunday when they battle the Vikings.
