Alabama’s quest for a new head coach may reach its conclusion sooner than expected, as legendary coach Nick Saban’s retirement was announced on Wednesday night.

Within hours of Saban’s announcement, the top candidate to succeed him is reportedly already in Tuscaloosa.

According to local news sources in Eugene, Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning is said to have arrived in Tuscaloosa on Wednesday night, fueling speculation that a decision regarding the coaching position may be imminent.

“As we did report before, I do, I previously worked in Alabama – in Tuscaloosa. Of course, I do have some sources there,” said anchor Brandon Kamerman of KVAL CBS. “We did confirm that Lanning is in Tuscaloosa – in Alabama. It doesn’t mean the job is signed – the contract is signed, but he’s there and what I was told is that the players were told a decision will be made in the next 72 hours”

Lanning has been at the helm of the Oregon Ducks for the past two seasons, where he achieved an impressive 22-5 record. Prior to his tenure with Oregon, he had valuable experience working on coaching staffs at both Georgia and Alabama.

While Lanning is considered a frontrunner, another prominent figure in the coaching world, Clemson’s Dabo Swinney, is also being mentioned as a top contender for the Alabama coaching position. However, it appears that some Alabama students may not be enthusiastic about the prospect of Swinney taking the reins.

Nick Saban’s retirement comes after an illustrious 17-year tenure in Tuscaloosa, marking the end of an era for Alabama football.
