Are Saints Chasing QB With Recent Major NFL Draft Trade?

The NFL world was shaken up Monday when the Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints agreed to a blockbuster deal that saw multiple draft picks from this year and next swap between the two teams.

Here’s a full breakdown of how it all played out, via Adam Schefter:

New Orleans now has two first-round picks to play around with in this year’s NFL Draft. The Saints have multiple needs that need to be addressed this offseason. A wide receiver to pair with Michael Thomas would be nice, along with finding an adequate replacement for left tackle Terron Armstead, who signed a deal with Miami during the free agency period.

While New Orleans’ brass could just use these newly acquired picks to fill out their roster, this move seems a bit too aggressive for the Saints to just use those picks on wideout and tackle. We know the Saints were deep in the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes just a few weeks ago, before resigning Jameis Winston to return as the starter. Perhaps new head coach Dennis Allen wants to get his hands on a quarterback of his own and kickoff this new era of Saints football on an exciting note.

It certainly makes sense from that perspective.

Winston was in the middle of a resurgent season in 2021 before getting injured, tossing 14 touchdowns to just three interceptions while posting a 5-2 record in seven games. But, the former Heisman winner only signed a two-year deal with New Orleans, and the team didn’t approach him for a return until it was obvious they were out of the running for Watson.

Typically, getting one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL Draft requires a trade into the top-5 at least. This year’s crop of signal callers isn’t as elite as year’s prior, but the group is still relatively deep and there are a handful of starting caliber quarterbacks to be found. There’s also a chance that New Orleans uses these first-round picks to package in another draft trade in order to move up even further into the first.

If that’s the plan, New Orleans could be in prime position to snag one of the top tier gunslingers in this year’s class. Whether it ends up being Liberty’s Malik Willis, Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, Ole Miss’ Matt Corral, or Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder, trading up into the top-10 would give New Orleans the opportunity to finally find their long-term replacement for Drew Brees.

Sticking with Winston wouldn’t be a terrible decision, but his future with the team is not set in stone just yet. When the Saints find themselves on the clock, don’t be shocked if their pick ends up being their future face of the franchise.
