Rumor has it that Kirk Cousins could be on his way to the Atlanta Falcons, and tight end Kyle Pitts had a rather strong reaction to a report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Florio recently said that Cousins and Pitts have already been in talks about who will wear the No. 8 next season, but Pitts has essentially called the report bunk.
Cousins is slated to be a free agent next week, and while the general expectation all along was that he would return to the Minnesota Vikings, things have changed.
The Vikings have said they want to keep Cousins, but not at the expense of their long-term financial flexibility. That seems to have created a gap between what Cousins feels he is worth and what Minnesota is actually willing to pay him.
As a result, there has been speculation that Cousins could ultimately be playing his football elsewhere next season, and the Falcons have been named as the most likely team to steal him away from the Vikings.
Atlanta is in desperate need of a quarterback. It rolled out Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke this past season, and neither player inspired any confidence.
Even with the club’s struggles under center, the Falcons still managed to contend for a playoff spot and were in the NFC South race right up until the last couple of weeks of the season.
If Atlanta is able to nab Cousins, it would certainly take a pretty big step. That is, of course, assuming that the 35-year-old is healthy heading into 2024.
Cousins tore his Achilles midway through the 2023 campaign, so there are certainly some questions about whether or not he will be the same next year.
The fact that he will be 36 years old at the start of next season isn’t helping his case, either.
We’ll see what becomes of Kirk Cousins in the coming weeks.
