The New England Patriots fell to 2-7 following their loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon, prompting further speculation about the job security of head coach Bill Belichick.

During a press conference on Monday morning, Belichick was asked whether or not he is coaching for his job at the moment, and he offered a very blunt response.

“I’m going to control what I can control and get ready for the Colts,” Belichick said, referencing the Patriots’ Week 10 matchup with Indianapolis on the horizon (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk).

Belichick also appeared on WEEI radio on Monday and told The Greg Hill Show that this season is “probably up there” among the most frustrating campaigns of his career. He was also asked about a conversation that owner Robert Kraft and his son, Jonathan (who is team president), were seen having during the 20-17 loss to the Commanders. Jonathan appeared to say to his father, “we’re not good enough.”

Belichick didn’t have much of an answer when asked about the Krafts.

“You’d have to ask them what they said,” replied Belichick.

The Patriots are off to their worst start since 2000, when they also were 2-7 through nine games in Belichick’s first year at the helm. New England ended up going 5-11 that season.

Belichick has forged an illustrious NFL career as the Pats’ head coach (and general manager), leading the franchise to six Super Bowl championships and nine Super Bowl appearances. He also pushed the Patriots to 17 AFC East division titles, including 11 straight between 2009 and 2019.

However, since Tom Brady departed the club via free agency in March 2020, Belichick and Co. have fallen on hard times, making just one playoff appearance and going 27-32 during that span.

New England will battle the Colts in Germany next Sunday.
