Browns Linked As Possible Trade Suitor For Bills’ Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs, Browns

The Cleveland Browns have consistently had one of the best defenses in the NFL during the 2023 season. However, for a multitude of reasons, their offense has left something to be desired.

Injuries have played a huge part in the inconsistent performance on offense. Running back Nick Chubb, offensive tackle Jack Conklin and quarterback Deshaun Watson all suffered season-ending injuries, placing backups into bigger roles.

One position that has been relatively healthy this season but underwhelming in some ways has been at wide receiver. The constant switching of quarterbacks, as four different players have started at the position this season, certainly hasn’t helped. But, outside of Amari Cooper and sometimes Elijah Moore, production has not come consistently.

It is one position which the team could look to make an upgrade this offseason. Who could the Browns target? Buffalo Bills All-Pro Stefon Diggs has been mentioned as a possible candidate for trade and he would make for an intriguing fit in Cleveland.

With Cooper a potential cap causality, the wide receiver room could look vastly different in 2024. Even if he does stick with the team, an upgrade behind him is needed. Diggs would present an intriguing option, especially as his replacement, should the Bills make him available.

That is something Connor Livesay of The 33rd Team believes could happen. Livesay hypothesized that the Bills could make Diggs available this offseason by putting him on the trade block.

“With Dalton Kincaid and Khalil Shakir progressing nicely and with a loaded wide receiver draft class coming up, the Bills could seriously look to move Diggs during the offseason.

The Bills-Diggs marriage has been somewhat weird for a few years. We likely look too much into Diggs’ social media responses and sideline interactions with [QB Josh] Allen, but it does not seem like things are all fine and dandy between the Bills and Diggs.

Diggs is just two years into the … $96-million contract extension he signed in 2022. So the team trading for Diggs would give up draft capital and take on a relatively big contract.”

Taking on that kind of contract would be a challenge for the Browns. Also, the draft capital could be hard to come up with given how much they surrendered to acquire Watson from the Texans. But, if a player of Diggs’s caliber becomes available, you have to at least do the due diligence.

His production in 2023 is right in line what he has done throughout his career in Buffalo. Diggs would provide a huge boost to the Browns’ passing game, giving Watson a bonafide No. 1 option should Cooper get cut or one of the best duos in the NFL if the front office can find a way to fit both on the roster.
