Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen had a rather long night with the referees during his team’s 24-18 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
First, he received a taunting penalty after pointing at a Bills player as he ran into the end zone for a game-tying touchdown in the first quarter.
But that wasn’t what really drew Allen’s ire.
Near the end of the first half, Allen was hit with a late intentional grounding flag after failing to complete a pass to wide receiver Gabe Davis.
Allen was clearly frustrated with the call on the field, and after the game, he expressed his displeasure.
“I’ve never seen that call in my life,” Allen said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “It’s an option route. Gabe can sit down or go. I wasn’t pressured. They decided to make that call and unfortunately didn’t allow us to get points there. I wouldn’t do anything different. I’m expecting him to run a go, he made the read to stop. That’s what it is.”
Essentially, Allen was not throwing the ball away. He was merely throwing to where he thought Davis would be, but the two had a miscommunication.
The penalty knocked the Bills out of field-goal range, which Allen says made a big difference in the final outcome.
“It’s a huge swing. Whether it’s three or six coming out of the half, scoring on back-to-back drives and getting yourself some momentum, that’s huge in a game, especially against a good team like we just played,” Allen said.
Josh Allen went 26-for-38 with 258 yards, a touchdown and an interception while carrying the ball eight times for 44 yards and a score in the loss.
Buffalo is now 5-4 and will take on the Denver Broncos next Monday.
