The Buffalo Bills are in the process of rapidly clearing cap space, and as a result, they may be able to sign a couple of pieces in free agency.
Of course, the Bills still won’t be able to spend big this offseason, because they will also surely be tight against the cap even after their recent spree of cutting players and restructuring contracts.
But, Buffalo could search the bargain bin for some potential steals.
Jared Dubin of CBS Sports likes Chicago Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney as an option for the Bills, for example.
Buffalo will likely be losing No. 2 receiver Gabe Davis to free agency, meaning there will be a rather big hole in the Bills’ receiving corps behind Stefon Diggs and Khalil Shakir.
One way or another, Buffalo will almost certainly have to add a wide out this offseason, whether that means signing a free agent or drafting one.
So, why not Mooney?
The 26-year-old will probably represent an affordable option as a result of a couple of down years to end his tenure with the Bears.
Mooney, who played his collegiate football at Tulane, was selected by Chicago in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft and showed some promise at first.
After catching 61 passes for 631 yards and four touchdowns during his rookie campaign, Mooney seemed to be ascending in his sophomore season, hauling in 81 receptions for 1,055 yards and four scores.
However, the last two years, Mooney’s production has declined significantly. He snared just 40 balls for 493 yards while reaching the end zone twice in 2022, and this past season, he finished with a mere 31 grabs for 414 yards and a touchdown.
That being said, Mooney clearly has talent, and a change of scenery may be exactly what he needs to unlock it—or at least somewhat rediscover his 2021 self.
Perhaps the Bills can offer that opportunity to him.
