The Arizona Cardinals are in the midst of a rebuild under the new regime of general manager Monti Ossenfort and head coach Jonathan Gannon. At 2-10, there isn’t a playoff run in the future for the team this season, but showing progress with Kyler Murray back under center would go a long way to developing confidence.

One of the players who will not be with the team for that stretch run is veteran tight end Zach Ertz. The news was actually released by his former teammate, J.J. Watt, who retired from the NFL earlier this year.

According to Watt, Ertz requested his release from the Cardinals and that request has been granted, as he will hit free agency. The plan of action for Ertz is to sign with a contender so that he can try and win a second Super Bowl ring.

Ertz had gotten off to a hot start in Arizona this season, catching at least six passes in three out of the first four games of the season. He was a big part of their passing game, but as the losses began piling up, he saw his playing time scaled back in favor of second-year tight end, Trey McBride.

The veteran tight end then landed on injured reserve because of a quad injury after seven games. Likely nearing a return to the field, it makes sense that he would ask for his release from the team so that he can try and win another title.

Ertz was involved in plenty of trade rumors in the offseason and ahead of the deadline on October 31st. But, his injuries were a detriment to getting moved at those times as he was recovering from offseason surgery as well.

This is a stand-up move by the Cardinals, honoring Ertz’s request to land with a contending team. It is something that players around the league will take notice of as well, as it is a sign that they treat their players well, putting them first and doing what is best for them.

Ertz is in his 11th season in the NFL and has been with the Cardinals since the Philadelphia Eagles traded him there during the 2021 season. Philadelphia is certainly a team that could pique his interest in free agency as a contender vying for a Super Bowl.
