The Los Angeles Chargers are still picking up the pieces after back-to-back disappointing seasons. They fell apart in last season wild-card playoff game, blowing a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and they finished just 5-12 this season.

With the lackluster tenure of deposed head coach Brandon Staley now in their rear-view mirror, the Chargers are focused on finding their next head coach. They have cast a wide net, and their candidates reportedly include University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who is a hot commodity around the NFL right now.

On Thursday, the team announced via its official Twitter account that it had interviewed David Shaw, the former longtime head coach at Stanford University.

Shaw was the head coach at Stanford from 2011 to 2022, and while he never won a national championship, he quickly led the school to three Pac-12 titles in a span of just four seasons, as well as two victories in the Rose Bowl.

Prior to that, he was an offensive coordinator there from 2007 to 2010 when Harbaugh was its head coach.

Shaw, 51, started his football career as a wide receiver at Stanford in the early 1990s. He played under head coaches Dennis Green and Bill Walsh, which gave him an early taste of effective coaching, leadership and game planning.

Later on, he was on the coaching staff of the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens before he spent the 2006 season at the University of San Diego as its passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

One should expect the Chargers to continue to do their due diligence on potential head coaching candidates. They badly need not only a coach with the requisite acumen and ability to maximize star quarterback Justin Herbert, but also someone who will build a winning culture and be a rock of stability for them.
