Keenan Allen and the Los Angeles Chargers finally got their first win of the 2023 NFL season on Sunday, but it wasn’t pretty.

Playing the Minnesota Vikings on the road, their defense, particularly their secondary, continually gave up big yardage plays, especially to Justin Jefferson, who collected 149 yards on just seven catches. In addition, the Chargers made some poor decisions on offense, particularly on their last full offensive series of the game. Facing a fourth down and one on their own 24-yard line, they opted to leave their offense on the field rather than punt, and a run attempt by Joshua Kelley resulted in a loss of downs and a golden opportunity for Minnesota to win.

Luckily for L.A., the Vikings failed to come through, partly because its defense came up with some big plays to break up passes that could’ve resulted in a touchdown.

In its 28-24 victory, star quarterback Justin Herbert went 40 of 47 for a monstrous 405 passing yards and three touchdown passes. A big beneficiary of his outstanding play was wide receiver Keenan Allen, who had an afternoon to remember. He tallied 18 receptions for 215 receiving yards, and on a trick play, he even threw a touchdown pass downfield to Mike Williams.

That made Allen only the second player in NFL history to ever have 10 catches, 100 receiving yards and a touchdown pass for at least 40 yards in the same game. The other player to do so? San Francisco 49ers legend Jerry Rice.

When a player is mentioned in the same breath as Jerry Rice in any way, it is a clear indication he is doing things the right way.

On the season, Allen now has a total of 402 receiving yards, which is third in the NFL behind only Justin Jefferson of the Vikings and Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill. Unfortunately for the Chargers, Williams had to leave Sunday’s game with a knee injury, which means Allen may need to continue to pour on the yardage for them to at least have a shot at making the playoffs.
