The Chicago Bears are being linked to Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones, and Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay does not feel the Bears would be a great fit for Jones.
Jones is set to hit free agency this coming offseason and will be one of the best available names on the market. Chicago seems like a team that would naturally be interested in Jones, given the fact that the Bears will have plenty of cap room and that Jones would bolster a pass rush that has already been improved with the addition of Montez Sweat.
However, Kay questions if it would be the best move for Jones.
Jones is turning 30 years old and will likely want to continue contending for Super Bowls as he has been throughout his tenure with the Chiefs. Chicago would almost surely not be able to provide that for him in the short term.
After all, the Bears are currently unsettled at quarterback, and head coach Matt Eberflus’ status with the club is up in the air. The fact that Chicago is just 4-8 this season and has made the playoffs just twice since 2011 is not exactly a big selling point, either.
Jones will certainly draw interest from a whole lot of teams, but whether or not he actually entertains all of those offers is another matter entirely.
Through his first 11 games of 2023, Jones has logged 24 tackles, 7.5 sacks and three passes defended.
Jones, who played his collegiate football at Mississippi State, was selected by Kansas City in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
He broke out in his third season, racking up 15.5 sacks. He has made four straight Pro Bowl appearances from 2019 through 2022, with his most productive campaign throughout that span coming last year when he totaled 44 tackles, 15.5 sacks, a couple of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Jones also earned a First-Team All-Pro selection for his efforts last season.
The Bears will take on the Detroit Lions this Sunday.
