Chicago Bears: 5 Bold Predictions for the Defense in 2018

Last season, the Chicago Bears defense ranked in the top ten. With help from an improved offense and better play from key players, the unit is ready to take an even bigger step forward.

Last season, the Chicago Bears defense was one of the few shining aspects of the team. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio did a superb job of getting his players in the right position to succeed. He did so even with injuries to key personnel. Fangio did exactly what the Bears hoped when they signed him. As a result, the team rewarded him with a contract extension.

This season, the team as a whole expects to take great strides and become a good team, maybe even a playoff team. In order for that to happen, the defense needs to lead the way. Yes, I know the offense entered the modern-day with new head coach Matt Nagy, but this is a franchise known for some of the best defenses in NFL history. If the defense steps up and shuts down the opponents, then it makes the offense look even better.

Fangio directed a top ten defense last season. This season, the players have visions of getting into the top five. If that happens, the Bears can spend the season competing for a playoff spot. They might not make it, but even competing for a spot throughout the season is a great step forward considering what’s happened over the half-decade.

So how good can this defense become? We take a look at five bold goals for the unit in 2018.
