The Chicago Bears have their work cut out when it comes to turning into contenders. General manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus know it will take more than one offseason to turn things around, but they are doing their best to improve the roster.
They made a trade down in the first round, picking up another pick from the Philadelphia Eagles when swapping picks. With the No. 10 overall pick, Chicago selected Tennessee offensive tackle Darnell Wright.
That was a great selection as they need to improve the blocking for quarterback Justin Fields. In Round 2, the Bears got to work improving what was one of the worst defenses in the NFL during the 2022 season.
With the No. 53 overall pick, the Bears selected Florida defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. The selection of Dexter drew rave reviews by Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports, who is very high on his potential.
“Huge and effortlessly powerful. Can play anywhere up and down the DL. Bull rush master. Difficult to move. Has to build out pass-rush move arsenal. Exquisite specific addition to the middle of Chicago’s defense.”
Dexter wasn’t the only defender that Chicago landed in the second round. Looking to bolster their secondary, the Bears selected cornerback Tyrique Stevenson out of Miami. Stevenson was garnering some interest as a possible late first-round pick, making him one of the steals of the second round according to Matt Miller of ESPN.
“One year after selecting a starting cornerback in Kyler Gordon in Round 2, the Bears get a potential outside starter in Stevenson. With Jaylon Johnson entering the end of his rookie contract, Stevenson could be his running mate or potential replacement, with Gordon lining up in the slot.”
It will certainly take more than two players to fix the Bears’ issues defensively, but Dexter and Stevenson are two great building blocks for the team to add. Along with the additions of linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards in free agency, this is a unit that should be much improved in 2023.
