The Chicago Bears are in need of another wide receiver, and Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton thinks that the Los Angeles Chargers may have a solution in Mike Williams.
Moton proposes that the Bears send a fourth-round draft pick to the Chargers in exchange for Williams, which would provide Chicago with a No. 2 wide out behind D.J. Moore while also helping Los Angeles generate some much-needed salary cap relief.
If the Chargers trade Williams, they would save $20 million, and given that they are about $21 million over the cap after the spike, moving him would obviously help significantly.
Of course, there is a caveat to the Bears adding Williams.
The 29-year-old is coming off of a torn ACL which he suffered three games into this past season, so it remains to be seen if he will be the same heading into 2024.
That being said, Chicago desperately needs to add weapons for whoever will be playing quarterback for the club next year, so it can afford to take a gamble on Williams. Plus, the Bears have plenty of cap room, so they can absorb Williams’ contract.
And when healthy, Williams is a fine receiver.
The Clemson product was selected by the Chargers with the seventh overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, and while he barely made an impact during his rookie campaign, he flashed his potential in Year 2, catching 43 passes for 664 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Then, in 2019, Williams broke out, hauling in 49 receptions for 1,001 yards and a couple of scores. He also averaged a ridiculously robust 20.4 yards per catch, which led the league.
Williams’ best season, however, came in 2021, when he snared 76 balls for 1,146 yards while reaching the end zone nine times.
He hasn’t exactly been a model of consistency throughout his career, but Williams is a proven talent who—again, if healthy—would certainly bolster Chicago’s aerial attack.
We’ll see if the Bears inquire about Mike Williams as the offseason progresses.
