The Chicago Bears will probably be trading quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, and one of the main teams that has been mentioned as a potential trade partner is the Pittsburgh Steelers.
However, if the Bears are relying on the Steelers to make a move for Fields, they may be left holding the bag.
League sources have told Dianna Russini of The Athletic that Pittsburgh is not actively pursuing a trade for Fields and seems content attempting to build around Kenny Pickett (via Mike DeFabo of The Athletic).
The Steelers seemed to make sense as a possible destination for Fields, as Pickett has struggled over the course of his first two seasons. But apparently, Pittsburgh doesn’t have much interest in Fields at the current point in time.
Obviously, that can change, and it’s also entirely possible that the Steelers are leaking this information as a smokescreen to try and cover their interest in Fields in order to maintain leverage.
Whatever the case may be, it’s looking like Chicago may be in for a rather difficult time trying to trade Fields in the coming weeks.
Fields is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played 13 games, throwing for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. He also rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Bears with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Fields has gone just 10-28 as a starter, although that is certainly not all his fault. Chicago has not exactly had a great team in recent years, although the Bears have shown signs of making progress.
So has Fields, but he has not been consistent enough to convince Chicago that he is its franchise quarterback moving forward, which is why the Bears seem to be set on taking USC’s Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
We’ll see what becomes of Justin Fields soon.
