The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime. They have already had a busy offseason, as they placed the franchise tag on cornerback L’Jarius Sneed and re-signed star defensive tackle Chris Jones to a record-setting deal before the legal tampering period began.
It will be interesting to see what they can do with Sneed, as that will impact how the rest of their offseason goes. If they can retain him, cornerback isn’t a pressing need. If he departs, the team will need to find a capable replacement for him in the secondary.
Another area of the team that the Chiefs will be looking to improve this offseason is wide receiver. The team had high hopes for some of its young players such as Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney heading into 2023 but things didn’t pan out as well as they had hoped.
NFL News & Rumors: Curtis Samuel, 2024 NFL Free Agency, Washington Commanders, Kansas City Chiefs Updates
Both players were disappointing, as rookie Rashee Rice stepped up and became Patrick Mahomes’ No. 1 wide receiver. Kansas City could use some replacements with veteran Marquez Valdes-Scantling being released this offseason.
One player to keep an eye on is Curtis Samuel. A second-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in the 2017 NFL Draft, Samuel spent the last three seasons with the Washington Commanders. He has reportedly been in contract talks with the Chiefs in the early going of free agency.
Samuel didn’t have the impact many thought that he would during his tenure with the Commanders, some of which was because of injury woes. But, quarterback issues also plagued the team, as Washington is in the market for a franchise player to lead their offense once again.
NFL News & Rumors: Curtis Samuel, 2024 NFL Free Agency, Washington Commanders, Kansas City Chiefs Updates
With a new regime in place, many players are leaving Washington for opportunities elsewhere. Drastic changes are on the horizon and Samuel doesn’t look to be a foundational player the team is going to build around, meaning he can find opportunities elsewhere in free agency.
Landing with the Chiefs would be great for Samuel. His skill set would be an ideal fit in their offense and playing with Mahomes is always good for rehabbing a player’s value. One season in Kansas City helped JuJu Smith-Schuster land a multi-year deal in free agency and Samuel could be on a similar path.
