Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been to the top of the mountain in the football world. He has won two Super Bowl rings, taking home the MVP in both games and two regular season MVP awards as well. He is the new gold standard for quarterback performance.

If there is advice that Patrick Mahomes is providing, it would be smart to take it. He recently provided some to his next opponent, Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears.

Fields and the Bears’ offense have gone viral for all the wrong reasons multiple times in the 2023 season. Whether it is him missing a wide-open wide receiver, a lack of effort from one of the players, or downright pitiful play calling, the Bears have garnered a lot of negative attention.

Most recently, Fields made headlines for saying his poor performance can be attributed to coaching. That is certainly part of the problem, as the staff isn’t putting him in a position to succeed. But, to have a player actually say it, is unprecedented.

Heading into a daunting matchup on the road against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, the Bears will have their hands full in Week 3. But, the reigning MVP still found time to give some advice to the young quarterback during a press conference.

“Trust your talent. Trust your instincts,” Mahomes said in his press conference. “He’s here for a reason. He’s made a lot of big plays happen in the NFL and college, wherever he’s been.

“Just trusting in your instincts and then go out there be the player you’ve always been — just not against us hopefully,” Mahomes added with a laugh. (H/T ProFootballTalk)

The Bears have not been taking advantage of the strengths that Fields brings to the team. His athleticism and rushing ability are game-changing, yet they are looking for him to make plays from the pocket. It is similar to trying to jam a square peg into a round hole.

The differing skill sets between Patrick Mahomes and Fields will make for some intriguing watching for fans. When the Chiefs and Bears take the field on Sunday, the two quarterbacks will also be making history.

This will be the first time in NFL history that a quarterback who threw for 5,000+ yards (Patrick Mahomes) takes on a quarterback who rushed for 1,000+ yards (Fields) the previous season. It is also the first time that a quarterback with the highest winning percentage is facing off with the quarterback with the lowest with a minimum of 25 games played.
