As Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes geared up for another Super Bowl victory, his father faced serious legal troubles that could have significant consequences.

On Wednesday, Patrick Mahomes Sr. was formally charged with felony drunk driving following his arrest in Texas last month, coinciding with his son’s preparation for the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.

According to online court records, Mahomes Sr. was indicted in Smith County, Texas, on March 28. The charge listed is ‘Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More IAT,’ carrying a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $10,000. This arrest marked at least the third time Mahomes Sr. has been apprehended on a drunk-driving related charge.

In 2019, Mahomes Sr. was sentenced to 40 days in jail after a previous DUI offense.

Despite his father’s legal issues looming, Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, chose not to discuss the matter with reporters leading up to his second consecutive Super Bowl victory in Las Vegas.

During the arrest, Mahomes Sr. was allegedly found with an open can of beer in his car and reportedly struggled during sobriety tests, leading to his custody.

The police stopped Mahomes Sr. for driving slower than surrounding vehicles in a car with an expired registration.

This isn’t the first time Mahomes Sr. has faced legal troubles. In addition to multiple DWI charges, he was also charged with public intoxication during a 2016 football game between TCU and Texas Tech, when his son played for the Red Raiders.

Patrick Mahomes Sr. has a notable sports background, having played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1992 to 2003 for teams like the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

He has three children: Patrick, 28, and Jackson Mahomes, 23, from his previous marriage to Randi Martin, and daughter Zoe Mahomes from a relationship with Anika Cooper following his divorce from Martin.

Notably, Jackson Mahomes, Patrick’s brother, encountered legal issues himself when accused of sexual battery by a restaurant owner last May. However, prosecutors dropped the charges in January due to the alleged victim’s reluctance to cooperate. Jackson instead pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery last month and received a sentence of six months’ probation.

This ongoing drama is undoubtedly not the narrative the Kansas City Chiefs superstar wants as he strives for a third consecutive Super Bowl victory.
