For all of the issues the Kansas City Chiefs had during the regular season, they really know how to come together when it counts most in the postseason. They continued their dominant playoff stretch under Patrick Mahomes, going on the road and defeating the Baltimore Ravens to advance to Super Bowl 58.
While the offense struggled in the second half of the game, something that has been frustratingly commonplace in 2023, their defense bailed them out once again. Two turnovers were forced inside the red zone that changed the tide of the game, as the Chiefs kept the Ravens out of the end zone all afternoon except for one drive.
Kansas City will now be heading to Las Vegas to take on the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers and compete for the Lombardi Trophy. However, they could be shorthanded during the matchup, as things aren’t looking good for one key offensive piece.
All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney missed Sunday’s game against the Ravens with a pectoral injury. While he hasn’t officially been ruled out for the Super Bowl, the odds certainly aren’t in his favor when it comes to suiting up.
NFL News & Rumors: Joe Thuney, Super Bowl 58, Kansas City ChiefsUpdates
“#Chiefs All-Pro guard Joe Thuney received varying opinions for his pectoral injury, sources say. Some experts believe it’s torn, others believe it’s a strain. Surgery is being considered. If KC advances to the Super Bowl, Thuney isn’t ruled out, but he’s considered a long-shot,” wrote Ian Rapoport of NFL Network on X.
Thuney was injured during the Divisional Round against the Buffalo Bills and did not practice all week leading up to the matchup against the Ravens. Nick Allegretti stepped into the lineup in Baltimore and would be in line to start in the Super Bowl as well.
Not having Thuney in the lineup would certainly hurt, as the interior of the Chiefs’ offensive line is nowhere near as strong without him. Baltimore found some success in the second half when rushing on the interior, something the 49ers will certainly look to take advantage of as well.
