Cleveland Browns enthusiasts eagerly await the team’s moves in the upcoming free agency period. Despite their current position in the bottom 10 for cap space, fans are hopeful that strategic cuts or contract adjustments could provide the financial flexibility needed to pursue top-tier talent.
Should the Browns decide to make a significant splash in free agency, bolstering their defense seems to be a priority.
In a recent column by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the league-wide interest in defensive tackle Christian Wilkins was highlighted. While the Houston Texans are mentioned as a potential suitor, Fowler also suggests that the Browns could make some notable moves.
However, any potential signing of Wilkins by Cleveland would hinge on their ability to create additional cap space. Presently, the Browns are listed with just under $7 million in available funds according to OverTheCap, placing them among the teams with the least cap space in the league.
Nevertheless, with the official start of free agency slated for March 13 (with negotiations permitted from March 11), General Manager Andrew Berry still has time to maneuver and potentially pursue a player of Wilkins’ caliber.
Following an impressive 2023 season with the Miami Dolphins, where he amassed a career-high 9.0 sacks, Wilkins is poised for a lucrative payday in free agency. This breakout performance has propelled him into the upper echelon of free agents for the upcoming season, with Pro Football Focus ranking him at No. 7.
Spotrac forecasts a substantial contract for Wilkins, estimating a four-year, $80.9 million deal.
While the acquisition of Wilkins would undoubtedly come at a significant cost for the Browns, both financially and in terms of roster depth, it could represent the type of bold move often made by championship contenders. With defensive maestro Jim Schwartz leading the team, there’s confidence that Wilkins would deliver value commensurate with his price tag.
Moreover, with standout defensive end Myles Garrett fresh off a Defensive Player of the Year award, bolstering the defense further could solidify the Cleveland Browns’ status as contenders heading into the 2024 season.
