Another wrinkle is going to be added to the saga between the Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor this week. Taylor, who started the season on the PUP List, is eligible to return to the team this week after missing the first four games of the season.

All signs indicate that he is healthy and the Colts are going to have him at practice this week. What happens after that, however, remains a mystery. Will Indianapolis still look to keep him long-term, or will they end up trading him to a running back needy team around the league?

According to a former NFL executive who spoke to NFL Analysis Network, that will all be determined in the coming weeks. The Colts are going to see how Taylor fits in with the scheme new head coach Shane Steichen runs and go from there.

“The Colts are going to try to work things out with JT and see how he fits into Shane Steichen’s offense. If it doesn’t click right off the bat, trade talks will intensify before the trade deadline. Everything rides on the next couple of weeks.”

The NFL trade deadline is currently set for October 31st. Taylor will have a four-game audition to see how he fits in Steichen’s offense. It is hard to imagine a player of his caliber not being a good fit, especially seeing the success that Zack Moss has had this season. Even as offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers, Miles Sanders and Austin Ekeler had huge seasons.

Waiting right up until the trade deadline will also provide other teams around the league to get a better picture of where they are at. His market could grow exponentially as the landscape of the league could be much different in four weeks than it is now.

The Colts have reportedly lowered their asking price, seeking something that could be as valuable as a first-round pick or near that. With more realistic trade demands, a trade is more likely to get done. Previously, what they were asking for gave the impression they didn’t really want to make a trade.
