Colts Urged To Trade Impact Defensive Lineman Before Season

Before the Indianapolis Colts make any moves, they need to ask themselves one thing; will this help in the development of Anthony Richardson? Getting the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft up to speed and acclimated to being an NFL player is the No. 1 goal of the franchise. If he can develop and realize some of his immense potential, the Colts are going to be in a great spot for years to come.

Of course, that is easier said than done and will require some patience. The Colts were a dark horse Super Bowl team heading into the 2022 season but there is still some work to be done on the roster to get to that level. It will take more than one offseason to turn everything around, but they are on the right path.

To take another step on that path, the Colts should consider trading defensive tackle, Grover Stewart. He was the player named by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report for the franchise that should be under consideration to be traded.

His inclusion on the list does make sense. Given the current state of the Colts’ roster, an argument could be made that Stewart isn’t part of their long-term plans.

With the defensive tackle market booming, the Colts likely aren’t in a position to retain Stewart beyond the 2023 season, the last on his contract. His salary would be one teams should be willing to take on as he is owed $9.3 million; five defensive tackles signed deals for more than that this offseason and Stewart is no slouch.

Last season, he totaled 70 tackles with 4.0 sacks, 12 quarterback pressures, nine tackles for loss and seven quarterback hits. Those are solid numbers and entering his age-30 season, Stewart should have a few more good ones in the tank.

A contending team looking to shore up their team in the trenches should give a long, hard look into acquiring Stewart. If a team is willing to offer an early Day 3 pick or late selection on Day 2, that may be enough to get a deal done with the Colts.
