Commanders Predicted To Land Derek Carr In NFL Free Agency

The Washington Commanders are a team that many people are keeping an eye on this offseason. They are on the cusp of being legitimate playoff contenders as they were consistent quarterback play away from earning a spot in the postseason this past season.

The Commanders went into 2022 with Carson Wentz as their starter, but after he suffered an injury, Taylor Heinicke took over. Heinicke did a good job of rallying the team and keeping them competitive, but his limitations were on full display near the end of the season. Wentz was given a chance to start again but put up a dud in what will likely be his final start with the franchise, similar to what occurred with the Indianapolis Colts.

Sam Howell is the only quarterback currently under contract with the team. It has been reported that he is looking like the starter for 2023, but the Commanders should be open to other options. With Eric Bieniemy joining the staff as offensive coordinator, their plans could change.

Bieniemy is looking to show that he is capable of succeeding outside of what Andy Reid has built with the Kansas City Chiefs. Basically putting his career on the line, it would be hard to imagine he doesn’t push for a veteran to be brought in. Could that veteran be Derek Carr?

Carr was released by the Las Vegas Raiders after nine seasons as the team’s starter before his contract became fully guaranteed. He is the best option available in free agency and would represent an upgrade for multiple franchises. The Commanders are one of those franchises and they are predicted to land the Fresno State product.

A team that is built to contend right away would be an ideal landing spot for Carr and the Commanders could qualify. Washington has a strong offensive line and weapons any quarterback would love to be surrounded by. Terry McLaurin is a legitimate No. 1 option at wide receiver with Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel behind him. Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson create a very good running back duo.

In addition to what they have offensively, Washington’s defense has elite upside as they ranked seventh in yards allowed and third in points allowed. The pieces for success are in place; all the Commanders are missing is the quarterback to bring it all together.
