The Youth Movement
This season two veterans in Tyrone Crawford and Antwaun Woods can help fill the void of Gerald McCoy but let us not forget the younger players that will be called upon to really step it up in 2020.
In 2019, the Cowboys did not have a first-round pick due to the trade with the Raiders for Amari Cooper. The team needed to make sure they hit on the second-round pick and that’s when they selected Trysten Hill out of Central Florida. Hill was a personal pick of then defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and was expected to break out relatively quickly. This didn’t happen. In his rookie year, Hill only appeared in seven games in the entire 2019 season. In those seven games, he was able to log five tackles with two quarterback hits. Underwhelming to say the least.
2020 could be a year for Hill to turn around. There are plenty of questions left unanswered but given his age and his hype out of college, Hill can be in line for a few more reps than his rookie year and he has to take full advantage.
If Hill is unable to show up in year two, there is someone waiting in the wings in his first year. Neville Gallimore was taken in the third round by the Cowboys in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Oklahoma product brings explosive strength and size and finished his college career with eight and half sacks, 147 tackles and two forced fumbles.
The Dallas Cowboys brought in Gerald McCoy to serve multiple purposes. The veteran leadership was already being felt within the locker room as the team debuted at The Star for training camp. His accolades speak for themselves and clearly will be missed greatly. For Jerry Jones to sign a high profile free agent in McCoy, he was highly coveted in the new regime. It will take a collective effort to get the job done in 2020 but this year’s Cowboys have the depth on the defensive line to make the impact that McCoy was ready to make.
