Cowboys Could Pursue Big Draft Trade For Elite Defensive Tackle?

Grover Stewart, Cowboys

Earlier in the NFL offseason, the Dallas Cowboys made a massive trade to acquire star cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts. It was a move that came out of nowhere, but one that improved the Dallas defense immensely. Could the two teams come together on another trade? This time, it would include defensive tackle Grover Stewart.

Over the last couple of months, the Colts have been open for business in trade talks. It appears that Indianapolis is heading towards a “re-tool” or “rebuild” for now. Trading a piece like Stewart could make sense.

Jerry Jones and company have made it clear with the moves they have made this offseason that they want to win a Super Bowl now. In addition to the Gilmore trade, they also acquired veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans. Another move would be no surprise for the Cowboys.

According to CBS Sports, Stewart is among the list of players that could be traded during or ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Cowboys are listed as one of the four top landing spots for him.

An underrated mainstay of Indianapolis’ front alongside DeForest Buckner, Stewart has been durable and stout as a starting interior man for the last four years. He’s also on a fair deal, due $10.875M in 2023 amid a slightly inflated DT market. But the Colts have reason to pivot to more of an offensive focus under coach Shane Steichen, especially with a new QB incoming. And dealing Stewart before his contract expires in 2024, entering his age-30 season, would also clear $9.6M.

During the 2022 season with the Colts, Stewart ended up recording 70 total tackles to go along with four sacks, a fumble recovery, and three defended passes. Those numbers show why the Cowboys would be interested in him.

At 29 years of age, Stewart would be a key piece for the Cowboys. If the fit works out well, Dallas could work on an extension for him. That makes this idea of a trade even more appealing.

It’s certainly an intriguing thing to think about. The Cowboys are right on the edge of Super Bowl contention and this could be a move to push them over the edge.

Offensively, Dallas has the makeup of being an extremely high-powered unit. On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys entered the offseason desperately needing to make some moves.

Expect to hear a lot of rumors about the Cowboys and Colts heading into the NFL Draft. Grover Stewart may not end up being moved, but if he is, Dallas would make a ton of sense.
