Cowboys Urged To Pursue Offseason Trade With Dolphins

When taking a look ahead to what the 2024 offseason could look like for the Dallas Cowboys, one position continues to stick out; running back. After using the franchise tag on Tony Pollard during the 2023 offseason, it is hard to envision Dallas doing it a second time, which would set his salary at about $12 million for the 2024 campaign.

Pollard has proven to be a productive weapon when called upon, but allotting that amount of money to a running back may not be in the cards for Dallas. There are other players at positions of need who are extension-eligible, which could leave them looking for cheaper alternatives in the backfield.

Not only is Pollard set to hit free agency, but so is his backup, Rico Dowdle. That could leave the Cowboys with quite a void to fill at the running back position. But, Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report has suggested the perfect solution for Dallas.

NFL News & Rumors: Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys Updates

He has suggested the team give a call to the Miami Dolphins and attempt to acquire running back Raheem Mostert. In Tansey’s opinion, a Day 2 or Day 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft should be enough to get the job done.

Mostert is an older back, as he will be 32 years old next season. But, he remains extremely productive, as he is having the best season of his career with the Dolphins in 2023. He currently leads the NFL with 16 rushing touchdowns and 18 total scores. The 924 yards he has racked up are also a career-high.

Before joining the Dolphins, Mostert had trouble staying healthy. But, he appeared in 16 games last season and has yet to miss one this season, knock on wood. He has nowhere near the same wear and tear most 31-going-on 32-year-old running backs have, as Mostert has carried the ball only 648 times in his career with 89 receptions.

NFL News & Rumors: Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys Updates

Scheduled to make only $2.3 million in 2024, Mostert would represent a massive pay cut for the Cowboys in terms of salary at the running back position, as Pollard is making $10.1 million on the franchise tag. If the Dolphins are okay with turning their backfield over to De’Von Achane in 2023, Mostert is someone who could be available this offseason.

The Cowboys could then pair Mostert with a re-signed Dowdle or use another draft pick on a running back to get things situated in the backfield. Dallas also has 2023 sixth-round pick Deuce Vaughn they could look to get more involved in 2024 as a change-of-pace back.
