It has been nearly three weeks since the Minnesota Vikings opted to release star running back Dalvin Cook. The Vikings didn’t want to pay him the $10.4 million that he was owed and he turned down restructuring his contract and taking a pay cut. Once a trade market didn’t materialize, they decided the best route to take was releasing him.
Given how cold his market has been as a free agent, it is no surprise that teams weren’t willing to pony up the price that the Vikings were looking for in exchange for the four-time Pro Bowler. There is no denying the talent that Dalvin Cook possesses and the impact he can have on the field, but running back just isn’t a position that franchises are emphasizing any longer.
There hasn’t been much to report on in the way of prospective landing spots, as returning home to the Miami Dolphins has been mentioned most prevalently. However, could an AFC East rival of the Dolphins swoop in and add Dalvin Cook?
That is what former NFL scout and Cleveland Browns general manager Michael Lombardi suggested while recently making an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show”. Lombardi believes that the New England Patriots would be a good landing spot for him as they need another back to pair with Rhamondre Stevenson.
It would seem that Dalvin Cook agrees with what Lombardi was saying. According to Alex Hoegler of Total Pro Sports, the Florida State product retweeted that post to his Twitter timeline that suggested he would be a fit in New England.
Landing in New England is something that would be in line with a report from last week that Dalvin Cook was looking to team up with free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. The Patriots are reportedly one of two teams that Hopkins has narrowed his choices down to, with the Tennessee Titans being the other.
If teaming up is something that Dalvin Cook and Hopkins genuinely want to do, New England is virtually the only place capable of making that happen. Adding two weapons of that caliber would certainly help Mac Jones get on track after a rocky sophomore season.
