The Detroit Lions have represented one of the NFL’s most pleasant surprises this season, as they have gone 6-2 over their first eight games and sit in first place in the NFC North.

However, as well as the Lions have played over the first half of the year, quarterback Jared Goff thinks the team can be better.

“I think there’s a lot of meat on the bone, both for offense and defense,” Goff said, via Tim Twentyman of the Lions’ official team website. “I’m sure they’d say the same thing that where we feel like maybe the Carolina game was a complete game, but other than that, I don’t know if we’ve really had one. And how do we get closer to that as the season comes to an end, and no reason to not start this week and try to put together a complete game this week as well.”

Detroit ranks second in the league in offense and fifth in defense, so the club has already been very good on both sides of the ball. Still, Goff points out that there is still things that the Lions can improve on, such as their efficiency in the red zone.

“There’s a lot of good to be had, but there’s a lot of stuff that we can work on,” he said. “And I think (head coach Dan Campbell) pointed it out, the red zone, and we’ll just continue to take care of the ball better. That’s what you’re always trying to do and will continue to be points of emphasis.”

Detroit ranks just 24th in the NFL in red-zone efficiency, so that was surely a point of emphasis for Campbell and Co. during the team’s Week 9 bye.

Through his first eight games of the season, Goff has thrown for 2,174 yards, 12 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 68.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 96.4.

The 29-year-old is now in his third year with the Lions after coming over in a trade that sent Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams back in March 2021.

Jared Goff made the Pro Bowl in his second season with Detroit last year.

The Lions will take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
