Lions Land Chargers’ Star Pass Rusher In This Blockbuster Proposal

Could the Detroit Lions swing a deal to land Los Angeles Chargers superstar edge rusher Khalil Mack?

Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus poses the possibility, suggesting that the Lions trade a 2025 fourth-round draft pick to the Chargers in exchange for Mack.

While Spielberger acknowledges that it will be difficult for Los Angeles to move Mack given his salary and the fact that he is viewed as a cut candidate, there may be a team who views Mack as too tantalizing of a talent to pass up.

The 33-year-old is coming off of a monster 2023 campaign in which he racked up a career-high 17 sacks to go along with 74 tackles, five forced fumbles and 10 passes defended en route to his eighth Pro Bowl selection.

Of course, the question is whether or not Mack can still play at that level consistently or if his production this past season was his swan song.

Prior to 2023, Mack had gone four straight seasons without recording double-digit sacks, and while he was still good during those years, he was not nearly as dominant as he was this season.

Mack, who played his collegiate football at Buffalo, was originally selected by the Oakland Raiders with the fifth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.

He spent the first four years of his career with the Raiders, making three Pro Bowls and earning a couple of First-Team All-Pro selections. Most notably, he won Defensive Player of the Year in 2016.

Mack was then traded to the Chicago Bears, where he would reside for four seasons. During that time, he landed three Pro Bowl nods and earned a First-Team All-Pro selection.

The Bears dealt Mack to the Chargers in March 2022.

The Lions could certainly use another pass rusher to put alongside of Aidan Hutchinson, as Detroit finished in the bottom third of the league in sacks this year.

Whether or not Mack is the answer is anyone’s guess.
