The Detroit Lions are still fresh off of a heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. In a game that seemed to be controlled by the Lions, they let things slip in the second half. Dan Campbell has received a lot of heat for making some questionable calls throughout the game, especially in fourth down situations.
Despite the loss, the Lions are now focused on the upcoming NFL offseason. They have an opportunity to improve their roster even more for another run in 2024.
Looking at the roster, there are not many major weaknesses. However, the Lions should try to improve their defensive secondary if the opportunity presents itself.
CBS Sports has predicted that the Lions will end up making a massive move in free agency to improve their secondary. They believe that Detroit will end up poaching cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Dallas Cowboys.
“The longtime cover man returned to Pro Bowl form in 2023, but with Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland in tow, Dallas may prefer allocating top dollar to other spots. Detroit, meanwhile, has cash to spend and a sore need at the spot. Projected team: Lions.”
Gilmore would be a massive addition for the Lions. He’s a proven No. 1 cornerback and is still playing at a star level.
During the 2023 season with the Cowboys, Gilmore ended up recording 68 total tackles to go along with a forced fumble, two interceptions, and 13 defended passes. Those numbers show why the Lions should pursue him.
Adding a talent like Gilmore would certainly take the Lions’ defense up a level. He is very experienced and would fit in nicely with the Detroit defense. This is something to keep an eye on as the offseason gets underway.
