Could the Green Bay Packers try and swing a trade with the Dallas Cowboys to acquire Trey Lance?
The Packers already have their franchise quarterback in Jordan Love. That much we know. However, what they have behind him is a major question mark.
Right now, Green Bay’s backup quarterback is Sean Clifford, and it’s hard to imagine that the team feels comfortable heading into 2024 that way.
If we learned anything from the Cleveland Browns this past season, it’s important to have a good No. 2 signal-caller, which is why going after Lance could make sense.
Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine suggests that the Packers send a fourth-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for Lance. He argues that Dallas has to worry about Dak Prescott’s next contract, so it may not want to pay top dollar for a backup in Lance.
But would Green Bay prefer a veteran like Ryan Tannehill rather than a young signal-caller in Lance to provide some insurance for Love?
Lance was taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but injuries and Brock Purdy’s emergence derailed his very short tenure with the club.
He was traded to the Cowboys shortly before last season.
Lance has significant potential, but he has thrown a grand total of 102 passes in his NFL career thus far, totaling 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions while completing just 54.9 percent of his throws.
It may be wiser for the Packers to pursue a more established quarterback with some skin in the game rather than attempting to trade for a youngster like Trey Lance, who probably wants an opportunity to start somewhere at some point. He definitely won’t get that chance in Green Bay behind Love.
