Lions Trade For Commanders’ Chase Young In Bold Scenario

Things have not gone according to plan for Washington Commanders edge rusher Chase Young.

Young was selected by Washington with the second overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and had incredibly high expectations going into his first season.

And you know what? Early on, Young delivered, registering 44 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown en route to a Pro Bowl appearance during his rookie campaign.

However, since then, Young’s career has been a massive disappointment, to say the least.

Nine games into his sophomore season, Young tore his ACL, and even before the injury, he has logged a meager 1.5 sacks for the entire year. The knee injury knocked him out for the remainder of 2021 and all but three games in 2022, where he totaled just five tackles with no sacks.

As a result, the Commanders declined Young’s fifth-year option, meaning the 24-year-old will be a free agent come springtime.

To make matters worse, Young suffered a stinger in the 2023 preseason and missed Washington’s Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals because of it.

With Young’s free agency looming, the Commanders could very well attempt to move him before the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.

Should that scenario arise, the Detroit Lions should make a push for the pass rusher.

The Lions could offer Washington a 2024 third-round draft pick as well as a seventh-rounder, giving the Commanders a couple of assets to play with come draft time.

Of course, Washington is currently 2-0, so the chances of the club entertaining a Young trade at the moment seem slim. After all, Young did record three tackles and 1.5 sacks in his return to the field this past weekend when the Commanders topped the Denver Broncos.

That being said, Washington is not expected to seriously contend, especially in the brutally tough NFC East. If things begin to go haywire for the Commanders between now and the end of October, they could attempt to move Chase Young, and the sack-starved Lions would represent a perfect fit.
