Lions Urged To Sign Star Defensive Back In Free Agency

The Detroit Lions are getting set to host their first playoff game in three decades, so their minds certainly aren’t on the offseason.

But that won’t stop media pundits and fans from projecting exactly what the team might do in free agency.

Bleacher Report’s NFL scouting department wrote a piece assessing each club’s biggest needs heading into the offseason, and when it came to the Lions, the subject of their secondary was broached.

Detroit is certainly in need for some help at cornerback, and Bleacher Report is eyeing what it feels would be the perfect target for the club: Chicago Bears star Jaylon Johnson.

Johnson is slated to be a free agent in March and will be one of the top available defensive players on the open market.

The 24-year-old has stated that he wants to remain with the Bears, and Chicago certainly has more than enough cap room to make that happen. However, whether or not Johnson’s wish actually comes true is another story entirely.

Should Johnson walk, he would absolutely have a long line of potential suitors, and the Lions could very well end up making a play for him.

Like the Bears, Detroit will have a whole lot of cap space this offseason, so it can definitely afford to sign a free agent of Johnson’s caliber.

Johnson is coming off of the best season of his career, as he registered 36 tackles, four interceptions, a forced fumble, 10 passes defended and a defensive touchdown in 14 games this year.

The Fresno, Ca. native, who played his collegiate football at the University of Utah, was selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Johnson has never played a full season due to nagging injury issues, but he should still be able to land quite the payday this spring.

The Lions will take on the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card Round this Sunday.
