The Seattle Seahawks shocked the football world when they traded franchise quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos this offseason. It creates a huge void in more ways than one on the roster.
For starters, they now have to find a replacement quarterback. Drew Lock was acquired in the trade, but how much confidence can the Seahawks really have in the Missouri product based on how he has played thus far in his career with the Broncos?
Figuring out what to do with the quarterback position will determine the direction the team goes in. Seattle isn’t as far off from contending as people think, but they could opt to go the rebuilding route with a young quarterback. Right now, Baker Mayfield would seem to make the most sense for them, as he is young enough to be around for a while but already has shown he can have success at this level.
The other thing that the Seahawks now need to replace is Wilson’s leadership. With Bobby Wagner also being released this offseason, Seattle just lost two pillars of the franchise, potential Hall of Famers and surefire ring of honor inductees down the line.
Someone will have to step up to fill that void. Wide receiver D.K. Metcalf sounds like he is willing to do it, as he believes his time to be a leader in Seattle is now.
This is certainly an encouraging development for the Seahawks. There has been a lot of speculation that Metcalf could be on the move eventually, especially if Seattle decides to rebuild the roster. Entering the final season of his rookie contract, he will be looking to secure a contract in the realm of what Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill receive this offseason.
If Metcalf is willing to become a leader for the Seahawks, then he is someone that the team should look to hold onto long-term. If they do bring in a young quarterback via the 2022 NFL Draft, having a budding star wide receiver to throw the ball to will only make the transition easier.
