Dolphins Showing Interest In Three Potential Defensive Additions

The Miami Dolphins are tied with the Baltimore Ravens for the best record in the AFC at 9-3. However, there is a feeling shared by many that they’re not quite as good as that record would suggest.

They haven’t had any wins, at least not yet, against any teams that are currently over .500. A big culprit has been their defense, which has shown some signs of improvement lately but still ranks 21st in points allowed.

That defense suffered a major blow when linebacker Jaelan Phillips went down with an Achilles injury on Nov. 24, ending his season. He had put up 6.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss in eight games this season and had been seemingly emerging as a star.

Miami has some challenging games coming up to wrap up the season, including contests against the Ravens and Dallas Cowboys. Apparently looking to bolster its depth, it reportedly worked out three defensive linemen on Tuesday.

NFL News & Rumors: Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis, Justin Ellis, Miami Dolphins Updates

“On Tuesday the Dolphins worked out defensive linemen Trevon Coley, Carlos Davis and Justin Ellis, seemingly shopping for veteran players who can be added to the practice squad,” wrote Omar Kelly.

Coley is an undrafted defensive lineman who is a native of the Miami area and played his college ball at Florida Atlantic University. In his four years there, he registered 14.0 sacks and 24.0 tackles for loss.

He went undrafted in 2016 and has played for the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals. He hasn’t appeared in a game since the 2020 season.

Davis was a seventh-round draft choice by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020. While at the University of Nebraska, he collected 9.5 sacks and 16.0 tackles for loss.

After playing in 12 games from 2020 to 2022 with the Steelers, Davis signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the United States Football League (USFL) in October.

Ellis, a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 by the then-Oakland Raiders after four seasons at Louisiana Tech University, was released by the Atlanta Falcons in late August after they had signed him about a month earlier.

He spent his first five seasons with the Raiders before moving on to the Baltimore Ravens and spending the 2022 campaign with the New York Giants.
