There is plenty of optimism surrounding the Denver Broncos heading into the 2020 season, and for good reason. Partly, it has to do with the fact that Drew Lock looks like the long awaited answer at quarterback.
Selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Lock was not expected to be a standout in his class. Much of the attention was on No. 1 pick Kyler Murray, and for good reason, but after that, Daniel Jones, Josh Allen, and Dwayne Haskins each went off the board in the first round.
For the Broncos, Lock still being on the board by the time they were on the clock for the No. 42 pick presented a golden opportunity. One the team has been waiting for since the retirement of Peyton Manning.
The plan for the Broncos was to develop Lock behind Joe Flacco before handing over the starting role. The fact that Denver posted arguably the least productive passing offense in the NFL with Flacco prompted the organization to make a change.
Ahead of the Broncos’ Dec. 1 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team made a switch at quarterback. Lock led the Broncos to a 4-1 record during his five starts. He completed 100-of-156 pass attempts (64.1%) resulting in 1,020 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.
With that, let’s take a look at why Drew Lock is the quarterback the Denver Broncos have been searching for.
