Entering draft weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles had a clear objective: fortify their defensive backs corps. Their strategy paid off during the first two days of the 2024 NFL draft.

In the opening round, the Eagles exercised patience, ultimately snagging Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell with the 22nd overall pick. General manager Howie Roseman, known for his savvy trades, didn’t need to wheel and deal to secure Mitchell, the draft’s top cornerback prospect.

The following day, however, saw Roseman back on the phones, orchestrating a move to acquire Iowa standout Cooper DeJean. DeJean, initially projected as a first-round talent, unexpectedly lingered on the draft board into the second round, surprising many observers.

Philadelphia traded both of its second-round selections, picks No. 50 and No. 53, along with a fifth-rounder, to the Washington Commanders in exchange for picks No. 40 and No. 78. With the 40th pick, the Eagles selected DeJean, a first-team All-American defensive back.

Shortly after his selection, DeJean faced the media and encountered an unexpected question.

“As you know there haven’t been many white starting cornerbacks in the NFL in a long time. Do you think that will prevent you from getting that opportunity?” a reporter asked DeJean.

Despite the curveball, he handled the situation with composure and grace.

“I mean if they put me out there I’ll be thrilled to play out there.”

There have been some crazy questions asked to young draft picks in the past, but this one may take the cake. What an absolutely insane and bizarre question to ask.

Cooper DeJean will be a high impact player for the Eagles and could end up being one of the biggest steals in the 2024 NFL Draft.
