The Philadelphia Eagles have already gone through a major change this offseason, trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts. That sets the stage for second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts to be the starter, although the franchise may look to add a veteran backup. Jacoby Brissett might be the backup that they target.
According to a report from Adam Caplan of Fox Sports, the Eagles are expected to target Brissett in free agency when the legal tampering window opens up.
Brissett makes a ton of sense for the Eagles to target. They hired former Colts’ offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni to be their new head coach. Sirianni knows Brissett well and would feel very comfortable having him as the backup to Hurts.
Just a couple of years ago, the Colts had Brissett as their starting quarterback. It was a rough season, but the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck made things very difficult. Brissett didn’t play poorly, but he didn’t wow anyone either, but could get another chance with the Eagles.
During that season, Brissett ended up playing in 15 games. He completed 60.8 percent of his pass attempts for 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Brissett also picked up 228 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
Jacoby Brissett may not be the best quarterback, but he can play. He could push Hurts for playing time and give the young quarterback some valuable competition. If Hurts ended up getting hurt, Brissett would be more than capable of coming in and playing.
The Eagles would be wise to bring in a guy like Brissett. He won’t break the bank, but he is a valuable backup. It makes a ton of sense for both parties involved.
Expect to see quite a few teams around the NFL show interest in signing Brissett. However, due to his connection with Sirianni, the Eagles make a lot of sense for the 28-year-old quarterback in free agency.
