ESPN lists Jamaal Williams as potential trade candidate for Packers

Jamaal Williams has become a fan favorite over the last couple of years for the Green Bay Packers and has been a solid piece for the team’s offense. Unfortunately, his future with the franchise may be a bit murky following the 2020 NFL Draft.

Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst made the interesting decision to draft Boston College bruising running back A.J. Dillon in the second round of the draft at No. 62 overall. Dillon is expected to be the thunder to Aaron Jones’ lightning for the Packers in 2020.

Where does that leave Williams if Jones and Dillon are going to be the Packers’ top two running backs? Quite simply, it may leave him off of the roster.

ESPN has listed Williams as a potential trade or release candidate for the Packers this offseason. It would be a bit of a surprise to see the team flat out cut him, but a trade could very well be a possibility at the right price.

Last season with the Packers, Williams ended up carrying the football 107 times for 460 yards and a touchdown. He was more of a receiving back, however, with 39 receptions for 253 yards and five touchdowns.

At just 25 years of age, Williams would be an intriguing trade target for a few teams. There are multiple teams that would love to add more running back depth. Williams would be one of the best available if the Packers are open to moving him.

While a trade or release could be plausible options for Williams, there is a good chance that the Packers will simply hold onto him. Jones is going to be the starter, there is no question about that. Dillon will bring some thunder and hard running ability to the offense.

Keeping Williams would give the Packers the security of having a back who can come in and play in case of injury. He could also be utilized in a three running back rotation.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what moves the Packers make throughout the rest of the offseason. Williams is a name to keep an eye on. He may stick around, but a move elsewhere is also a possibility.
